Ten Frankfort/Franklin County organizations launch household greenhouse gas reduction project
To address climate change, ten Frankfort and Franklin County organizations are partnering this fall on a greenhouse gas reduction project that focuses on households. The project, called “Lighten Up, Frankfort!” is being promoted by Frankfort Climate Action Network (FrankfortCAN), an all-volunteer group in the community. Lighten Up, Frankfort! involves residents working together in small groups to reduce their household carbon footprints.
Members or employees of the organizations are forming teams of five to eight households that will meet four times and commit to actions that will reduce each household’s greenhouse gas emissions by 5,000 pounds per year. The teams are using a workbook called “The Low Carbon Diet,” which is available at discount to participants at Poor Richard’s Books. Read More

Go on a Low Carbon Diet!
Lighten Up Frankfort! is using a simple and attractive guidebook called The Low Carbon Diet which is being employed successfully to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in communities around the country. Participating households will gather in small groups four times over the course of one to three months to calculate their household’s carbon footprint, set a target for reduction, and plan or implement changes that will reduce their emissions to meet their target.
Lighten Up, Frankfort! is running a pilot program September through November 2009 involving teams from 10 local organizations. In December we will celebrate the total carbon reduction achieved through the pilot program. This initial campaign will give us a chance to gain experience and engage community partners in preparation for a community-wide drive in 2010.
If you would like to participate and need a Low Carbon Diet book ($11), please email lightenupfrankfort@gmail.com
